Session Description:


This year's program is an in-depth examination of the key issues in small business banking and e-commerce via the Internet. We will discuss customer and provider trends, strategy, profitability, service and retention issues with a special focus on wireless banking issues. Maria Erickson will present detailed research data from NFO's 2000 study of small business and middle market companies. Catherine Allen of the Banking Information Technology Secretariat will present the latest research from BITS on wireless banking for business. Valerie Kramer of The Billingzone will discuss EIPP issues, describing how to develop relationships with small/midsize companies based on this technology. And Alex Hart from Corillian will describe current trends in small business usage of online banking.

About Maria Erickson


Maria Erickson is responsible for the commercial research line of business at the NFO WorldGroup, one of the largest research firms globally. Her responsibilities include custom and syndicated research focused on the commercial, small business and SOHO sectors as well as retail relationships with business owners and affluent consumers. Her projects focus on market share/share of wallet, image and satisfaction, market segmentation, price elasticity and pricing strategies, customer needs identification, channel strategy and demand estimation. Maria has led the commercial research group at PSI Global, an NFO company for seven years. Prior to joining PSI Global, Maria was an analyst with Salomon Brothers. She is a Certified Cash Manager (CCM) and has an MBA from the University of Central Florida.

About Alex Hart


Alex Hart is President of Corillian Corporation, and is responsible for leading the company's efforts in marketing, product management, product engineering, corporate development, strategic alliances, human resources and administration. Prior to joining Corillian, he was vice president of business development for Microsoft's TransPoint electronic bill presentment and payment venture with First Data Corporation and Citibank. Prior to joining the TransPoint venture, Hart served as the business development manager for the Microsoft Internet Finance Server Toolkit, more commonly known by its code name, Marble. Hart holds a degree in American and East Asian History from Harvard College.

About Valerie G. Kramer


As the Chief Operating Officer at BillingZone, LLC, Ms. Kramer is responsible for product development and delivery as well as on-going customer and partner relationship management. These responsibilities span designing new product features, implementing electronic bill presentment and payment (EBPP) services for billers, supporting billers in their efforts to recruit and enroll their customers and providing customer service and support.

Prior to joining BillingZone, Ms. Kramer led PNC Bank's Strategic Business Development group developing new products and services for the Treasury Management Division. Under Ms. Kramer, in addition to work on EBPP products, the group launched the Treasury Management internet-based Service Center and new short-term investment services. Other professional experiences include Mellon Bank, Union Pacific Railroad, IBM as well university management positions at Carnegie Mellon University.

Ms. Kramer holds a Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering from Northwestern University and a MSIA (MBA) from the Graduate School of Industrial Administration at Carnegie Mellon University.

About Catherine A. Allen


Catherine A. Allen serves as CEO of BITS, The Technology Group for The Financial Services Roundtable. Catherine also is Founder and Chair of The Santa Fe Group, a strategic consulting and research firm that specializes in emerging technologies, innovation, partnering and alliances. Previously she was Vice President, Business Development and Alliances, reporting to the Senior Technology Officer of Citicorp, where her responsibilities included developing and managing strategic alliances with technology and telecommunications companies for new, technology-based products and services. She chaired several cross-Citibank Task Forces and represented Citibank as Founding Chair and President of the multiple-industry-based Smart Card Forum. Catherine first joined Citibank to head marketing and planning for the market trial of the Enhanced Telephone, a home-banking service offered over screen-based telephones. She reported to the General Manager of the U.S. Card Products Group where she had responsibility for strategic alliances and technology-based new product development.

Prior to joining Citibank, from 1985-1989, Catherine was a Director of Corporate Planning for Dun and Bradstreet, and she managed market research and planning for the Donnelly Talking Yellow Pages. She also served as a consultant to CBS, Inc. on new technologies and international trade issues, while a professor at the American University's Kogod College of Business Administration.
